A fun position drawn from a recent game of mine.

A side note: Please don't put the answer in the forum if you solved it. If you don't know the answer, message someone who posts 'easy!' and make a friend by asking them for the solution. Novel idea eh? Enjoy Laughing

Cool idea. There is no escape even if Queen moves to e7 then Rae1 would force the queen to leave protection of f7 square.

Initially Qe7 looked like it might be OK because of Bxe1, but this line is decisive:

1... Qe7

2. Rae1 Bxe1

3. Rxf8+ and mate is forced.

If, on the other hand, 1... Qxd6 it looks like mate can be avoided at the cost of a Queen for a Knight,  (white has some interesting alternative options in response including 2. Bxg7+ and 2. Rxf2 where both the Queen and the Rook are untouchable, but I couldn't seem to make either lead to a forced mate).

This is going to the first in my collection of puzzles gathered from my actual games. It's so rare, for me anyway, to get such nice positions to come around, so it is nice to capture them when they come by.

What a coincidence, I dreamed (first time I dream of chess) of this trick (the only thing I remember my grandpa once showed me)! LaughingCool

The black queen was in a somewhat different position though, and it was without the rook stuff in the F1 area.
