This is an ordinary mate in two. But after you've solved it, the interesting question is... Is it possible for black to castle? What do you say?

Isn't it illegal for black to castle before white moves? The white queen is attacking the square in between the black king and rook. Though after 1.Qa1, black would have been able to castle.

At first it seems like you're right. After 1. Qa1 0-0-0, there is no mate in two anymore. But the question remains, after white plays Qa1, are black really ALLOWED to castle? Look carefully! Smile

No! the explanation is this: Black cannt defend by castling because his last move had to have been by his king or rook.
