Yeah that's an interesting problem, because if you start to expand the board that "pattern" that was started by the first 8 queens turns into 8 groups of queens in the same orientation. In the jargon of modern math that would be called a "self-similar" shape. Comes up in topics like complexity, fractals, chaos...
You can use pawns and pretend they are Queens. Someone posted a link to this puzzle at one point. I remember it only taking a minute or so, despite the poster claiming it to be much more difficult. Maybe I got lucky.
Place eight Queens on a chessboard so that they are not attacking each other.
