Vasily Smyslov composed this study in 1999, when he was 78, hardly able to see the board.

Could he hardly see the board because of vision issues or are you assuming this because of his age? I ask because I'm older than 78 and can see like a hawk. At least that's what my nurse tells me.

Smyslov really has a very bad vision. That was the reason he completely withdrew from over-the-board playing after 2002.

As for the game finishing: 17... Kc4 18. Nf3/e2 Kxc3 (18... Kd3 19. Ne1/f4+ and 20. Nxg2) 19. h6, there's no chance for Black.
