Usually, a player is stalemated because if he moves any piece, his king will be in check. So I got to thinking about this "puzzle" - what if white were allowed to move into check, could he still be stalemated?
The answer is yes, for example:
White's pawns are moving up the board, but all the pawns are blocked from advancing, white's rook and knight are blocked by his own pawns, and white's king is stuck in the corner surrounded by his own pieces. Even if he were allowed to move into check he couldn't move.
Now this is pretty good, but black is helping with his rooks. So let's take it a step further, and ask: Can white be stalemated without any help at all from black?
White's pawns are all on the 7th rank, but can't advance to the 8th rank because they are blocked by pieces. In turn, the pieces can't move because they are blocked by pawns. White has stalemated himself, with black's king far away.
The position is a little unrealistic, so maybe you were wondering if it's actually possible in a real game. Yes! White just has to promote two of his pawns to rooks, get rid of his knights, and then arrange the pieces. For example:
So there you have it.
I don't see how white is stalemated there..
I added some clarification - in both these positions white's pawns are moving up the board (on the 6th or 7th ranks).
