Sometimes I feel the problems between 2000 - 2200 is harder than the problems between 2200 - 2400. Why is that? Is it something to do with the scoring system? Or my imagination? Or is it just that one is sometimes blind for easy one or two move problems but can see 3 - 5 move combinations easier because there is some familiar pattern - you know where the problem is heading towards.

The rating of a problem is determined and adjusted automatically by people failing or solving it.
Sometimes it may just be a temporary fluctuation, because the last couple of people trying this problem happened to manage to solve it. Or sometimes a fresh problem might be still on its way rising towards its final approximate rating at which it will settle.
And sometimes it may be simply that other people may find slightly different problems easier or more difficult, that can vary a little to some extent.
another thing maybe that the tactics 2200-2400 is more difficult but I ve seen it somewhere before in a tactics book or so.
Yes, or you might have seen a similar tactics somewhere before, or you might be already more familiar with a certain type of motif than with others ...

I agree. Very true.
Well, there is also a lot of tactics problems above 2200 that repeat themselves. Recently Ive got 3 problems (different problem numbers) with precisily the same position - this helps to keep you above 2200 in TT.

Hi forrie,
thanks for pointing out that tactics trainer problem 0171578.
You were right to notice that there was something unusual about that problem. The main line was very easy (easier than players at that level would expect their problems to be ). In addition, there was a second solution that was also winning quite a lot of material.
So I have now deleted that problem from tactics trainer because it was ambiguous.
Thanks for helping to improve tactics trainer

Hi Ilmago
I am glad someone now agrees with me.
It is still a good problem. Maybe one can just change the rating level to let say 2000 or so?
Keep well
