If black has a pawn, it is not a mate only with white bishops.

We also say that you can't mate with only king and knight, but if the opponent has other pieces it is possible.

    just a query, if K&N vs K&RP a win?

It is possible to win, though not if black doesn't help. The same as with bishop + king vs pawn + king

Hey BlessedStar, I am asking you a question:

What boogles me is: Can White win this (#22) by force?Undecided

Agree with pfren, there is no way of forcing the pawn to advance whilst keeping the king stuck in the corner. Because you would need to cover h2 and g1 at the same time to hold the king in the corner, but they are both black squares so this is impossible. Draw.

"The ideal position is obviously: Kg3, Bh1, Bc6, Bc4 / Kg1, h3 with Black to move when white wins after 1...h2 2.Kf3 Kxh1 3.Kf2#, but this position cannot be forced (unless I am missing something big and fiendish)."

Based on IM pfren and madhacker, I therefore coclude that against a King and lone h-Pawn, White can win if he has five(5) light-squared Bishops!

you can if you promote 3 pawns to bishops on white squares

And keep the initial one or promote four to white bishops. But is it best mate ever if you first limit yourself by taking bishops instead of queens?
