The first move is tricky but the rest sort of makes sense. It's hard to break old habbits in what you should look for though. I didn't make this puzzle btw it's from a book.

Why would someone want to do a selfmate from this position when they are only one move away from checkmate?

Because that's the point of the puzzle.

The self mate is forced, there's no moves black can do to avoid it. That's the whole point.

How can a self mate be totally forced couldnt you opponent just sacrifice pieces.still cool puzzle though

Look at the puzzle and you'll see it. Black is in what you could call reversed zugzwang, black can't make any bad moves. Look on blacks possible moves every move and you'll see that black only have one legal move on each one.
