White is in horrible shape, and is about to lose a lot of material. It may look impossible, but White has a very solid method of drawing this position.

Jamie, your diagram position (No. 1) shows that White King is in check and for sure Black can capture the Rook next move, winning the exchange.
Drawing the game for White adter the exchanges is very difficult unless Black blunders or White offers draw and Black accepts it!!
the game is a forced draw, any move black makes and the 50 move rule makes it a draw

If you play through the game, even if you don't spot the fact that 50 moves has passed since the last capture or pawn move, you at least can see it's just a lot of shuffling pieces back and forth. :)
That's great! I just look at the final position. I never played the moves at all. And I forgot that about that rule!
