Nice puzzle, but i don't get why black needed to move the pawn. Qd6+ solves blacks problems, doesn't it? I didn't put a number in front of it because i think you can play it anytime instead of moving the pawn.

If you check the White King, it moves giving checkmate in two moves. For example:

4 .... Qd6+

5 Kf5+ Qf6+

6 Bxf6#

That is indeed the very point of the queen sacrifice.

Very very nice puzzle.

I miscalculated and opted for 1.Be7? which doesn't work as black has a check.

Then black attacks with Qxf7+. You need to move the king, and blacks king can escape, which means that you'll probable loose.

Nice one! Is this from TT? I solved it, but it took me all of 30 minutes.

It would be nice to play something like this in an actual game :-) The thing is, when you solve problems, you know it's there. You know there's a solution and you keep looking for the spectacular.

Presumably the fact that after Qd6+ any king move to get out of check leads to mate in 2 moves for white... but he didn't feel like informing Raptor of this information.
