How can white win from this position?
I will not give the solution before Saturday afternoon.

This is a check mate puzzle your computer can't help you with, so you must do the work by your self Tongue out

Interesting. Is this taken from somewhere or you have created it by yourself?

Taken from a Norwegian newspaper; Dagbladet.

Interesting. I don't know Houdini can be that strong.

it would be more interesting if it were from a real game...because than you have feeling to gain knowledge

Stockfish2.0 found a mate in 12 in less than 10 seconds

I can solve it by myself.

    Can I give a hint?

Hint 1: THE BISHOP NEEDS TO GO

@OP: Chessmaster: GM Edition found the solution immediately.

@boymaster: I like how you gave a hint before obtaining the permission you requested. Wink

This is an example of made up hogwash, which is what also keeps astrology and creationism viable. Next time try using Houdini, Stockfish, Firebird, Rybka and/or Fritz before you announce that you have an problem that computers can't solve.

I also can solve it, but with 1.Kc8. Originally I was so reluctant to find the solution because at first glance this is a draw position. But Kc8 made it possible. Very nice.

But the idea behind this endgame puzzle is very applicable for real game situations. It is very nice how we can "lock" enemy King at a corner by putting a Bishop and King next to him.

Well, Fruit 2.1 finds a mate score (+99.77 at 18 ply) in 1.08 sec on my 1.3Gz Celeron M laptop. It switches to the corresponding move Kc8 already at 13 ply, with a +4.99 score.

Even Fairy-Max can solve it, although it needs 25 sec to find the key move at 19 ply (with +6.78 score). I didn't have the patience to let it search all the way to mate, that took too long. But what can you expect of an AI of only about 100 program lines...?

I have never used Rybka but maybe you can find seeting related to memory such as "hashtable size".

Huidini found this in under 10 seconds. Under 5. Engines can do endgames.

Houdini found it in under 1 second actually.
