It is less believable that the one I sometimes reiceved to tell me I had won a few bucks in a lottery that has taken part between random users of the net.

can't this people write a mail in decent English? cause, if it sounds bad even for me, a French speaker.......

That is a good one ! The best part is how it works out to be exactly $ 500,000 Dollars ( not something like $ 494,683 due to the exchange rate with the Benin Republic ).   

I had one the other day, in which the English was so appalling, I was reminded of Chinese technical instructions, twenty years ago.

Surely, if you're on the make and first impressions are paramount, you try to rope in someone who is mother tongue (or close). Anything else is just an obvious failure.
