noticably??? In 100 meters sprint miliseconds decide who is going to win!!!! If a drug can increase your chance (no matter how small) to win there will always be people that are going to take that drug. . .

Definitely. Steroids should not be used in the sport of chess.

Throughout the 10,000 years humans drink alcohol. . . in normal quantity it is good (healthy)  for you but like any other thing if overly used it is bad for you. . .

But I meant that is permitted to drink and cpmpete in all olympic sports. . .

I would have to agree that caffeine has got to have positive effects -- at least in the short and midterm.  I believe it is either Kramnik or Tupolov who drinks tea during the game?  One of the top GMs is known for drinking cola drinks too.   Basically if wearing down your opponent mentally is part of the game then clearly the players with caffeine aiding them have an advantage.

OMG, I can't believe how many of you actually came out for/against this issue.  Who knew it would be such a controversial topic!

Hey, Chess is an Olympic sport.  So, they should already test for drugs.  Especially Ginseng Ginkgo Biloba washed down with beer!

As far as I am concerned drugs/alcohol are a personal choice.

That said, anyone considering competion chess should not bring their alcohol, or any other body altering substances into their games.

Not only is it a matter of fairness, but also respect. Everyone is different, respect is what should keep one from competing while on drugs.

Perhaps things are a little different in Canada, in Europe beer is routinely drunk whilst playing competitive chess, alcohol often being sold by the tournament organisers (sometimes even in the playing room). Just a guess, but have you ever played in an OTB chess tournament nzoer? or just on-line? Undecided

As I am already aware.

As for Canadians for the most part we are not raised to indulge in daily drink , but we do enjoy our weekend binges...  In the end I suppose we never hear of athletes getting in trouble for alcohol as its hard to determine when the alcohol was taken.  I was more or less referring to drugs.

Alcohol in itself is a downer, or upper, depending on amounts, and the individual in my opinion why bother if you can pass?

And no hun I have not competed, not that i wouldn't want to.

I agree with drug testing for chess tournaments.  Chess is a game which is a strategic battle between two minds, and if those minds are altered by anything during the game, then those things do not have a place in the chess world.
