kids are not playing chess anymore, now kids love video-games.Isn't chess fun?why kids LOVE video-games now and think chess is just for nurds? What do you think, do you have some kind of theory?
SteveM
Video games are very exciting and popular. Kids need to see that chess has the same kind of excitement, just in a different form.
The popularity of chess goes up and down; you would expect this from anything that has true longevity. Here in the States, it's picking up.

I think chess is approaching a new golden age. Even though kids have so many more games to choose from these days, the ability to find a chess game any time of the day or night via the internet is making chess more and more popular. Also, in the US, we are starting to reap the benefits of the many "chess in the schools" programs that have exposed kids to chess at a young age. I am increasingly gratified by the many chess blogs and websites that have been created lately by kids (broadly defined).
I think chess also is starting to get an elitist label as well. Anybody can play Doom, but how many people can play chess well? I think the mystique of chess is serving to bring more kids into the fold.

I agree about an "elitist" reputation chess is getting. When people find out I play, that's the reaction I usually get from them!
I think that unless people learn when they are still in school, they decide they are too old to learn and lose interest. I think it's the older newcomers that get more frustrated in the learning process.

None of my 15 chess players are what you would call nerds!
The kids are very fascinated with chess...
Mad_dog_96
Aye chess has the reputation for nerds and geeks which is true to a degree. We need to teach normal kids how to play.

I think children are easily drawn towards video games than chess because of the grafical images and sounds that can be desplayed.Besides battle chess, chess looks like a boaring game to the untrained eye,but its just a guess...
