i have been wondering if there is any coorelation between a person's choice of openings and/or their strategy and tactics and their personality type. for instance: a type( a) personality might have an agressive stance , opt for control of the center, leave pieces hanging as a trap, use the chat line to harass his/her opponent. a meeker personality might fianchetto their bishops, have a defensive posture,or have a weaker pawn structure. in other words, is it possible to determine the type of person you are playing against by their chess moves? i know when playing face to face, part of the game is to "know your enemy". this is also true when playing cards,at work, or any other type of interaction. what are your thoughts on this, or am i blowing smoke in the wind?
I was always very competitive at anything I did as a child and I think that has transferred into my chess style as an adult. I'm find I'm recklessly aggressive to a point that I always want to have the tempo and be forcing my opponents moves all the time, more often then not this style seems to backfire, and I'm left trying to pick up the pieces in the end game. I've have started to try and compensate by playing more quite openings just to restrict my tendencies.
So yeah I do think your personality type greatly influences your style of play.
>I've played a few drunks who opened up with the Scotch.<
