In Australian chess, all you need to do is put your opponent in check to win. "That's check, mate."

if black queen moves to a8 no check mate exists. (knight moves queen takes bishop, pawn moves queen takes pawn)
if white tries to buy time (forcing black to move queen from a8) queen checks the king
