In 1979, I went to go see Aerosmith in some of their druggier days. There was this little known band called "AC/DC" opening for them. Angus was his spastic self and Bon Scott could keep up with him. They were loud and raucous and raunchy and fun! Now imagine this is the first band you have ever seen play live. I was totally blown away. Aerosmith should have not even bothered to go on as AC/DC had blown them off the stage before they even started.
I've seen so many concerts since then, and all have been measured against AC/DC. Priest, Maiden, and Dio all matched up to them. To me, it seemed they loved what they were doing and still enjoying themselves no matter where they were in the tour.
I saw Kiss in 1980 and thought "These guys need to give it up". But what do I know? Gene is still milking people of every dime he can. I think what makes a concert good to me is when you see that the band are still having fun on stage. I would rather stay home and listen to a greatest hit package of a band than see a tired performance that cost me 50 bucks to see (today's prices).
2004 was by far the best year of my life, maybe not year but i have yet to top the birthday gift my bother got tickets to my first ever concert, at the time they were 'nt my fav band but hell free tickets to see Metallica live i can live with that.
the show was bloody awesom, im telling you it went for over 3 hours and they evan brout out some of there older stuff,i swear i nealy died 20 times that night getting lost in the crowd or crushed in the mosh pit i still to this day have not had a time like i did for my 20th birthday but thats a different story.
the high light of the show would have to be would they finished there last song and the screaming metal heads just started shouting as 1 WE WONT MORE, WE WONT MORE and the next thing i know BOMB they are back out here tearing it up.
they played 3 more songs then left. i dont think i will ever forget that night or recover the hearing loss, And that brings me to this new years resashion SEE MORE CONCERTS.
Because of a back injury, I have to pick and choose the concerts I go to. It bums me as some of the bands I would really like to see play in a metal club in Detroit, but it is packed to the rafters. Not conducive to keeping from getting shoved and the like. No one does it on purpose, but that's life.
Another outlet for me has been buying concerts on DVD. Now, I try to act like I would at a concert as I'm watching it (headbanging, horns) and it does help. But if a band comes to a place that I can go to, I usually go. I did refuse to go see Motley Crue/Aerosmith last year d/t $150 ticket prices. I like both bands, but not that much.
I was able to go to "Monsters of Metal" over last summer because of the location. I was in the 10th row and it was great. I was surprised that Testament was the highlight of the show. Not that Heaven & Hell or Priest did a bad job, Testament seemed to be really into it. Now in all fairness, the guys in the other two bands are middle aged to ready for retirement. I don't expect them to run all over the stage like they did many years ago. 6 hours of metal was great though. I want to see Gigantour if it comes through next year.
