What is wrong with the free and open exchange of ideas? Our tv's are garbage cans for the mind, our movies arent fit to watch, the "music" (if you can call it that) that is permeating our young people makes me puke , it is degrading to women and children,and we arent supposed to talk about politics or religion. I just dont get it. I am definitely not afraid of a free and open disscussion. What about you?

I agree.  If I didn't care about what my car looked like, when I actually get my theoretical car I'd put the bumper sticker "kill your TV" on it.  Video games are just as bad....and I think it depends on what genre of music.  I personally am not a fan of rap, as the lyrics are painful to the point of laughter.

The "ban" on politics and religion is sensible, as it keeps people from discussing two things that make for very heated arguements and exchanges.  This site is chess.com, not religion.com or politics.com.  So, it only makes sense that it's centered around chess.  Getting into an arguement online over politics can be done elsewhere, chess.com is for the chess lover! 

you CAN talk about religion or politics, just not here. i:)  talk about both of them often.

i love to talk about ideas openly and freely. and i agree with you about most music, tv, and movies. as a people we are thinking less, and doing more wrong because of it.

Freedom of speech is something I hold very dear! the T.V. ha, that is why I call it the idiot box. The movies are garbage media is ridiculous now full of lies and hypocrisy. The music I will disagree with you on, unless we are talking about that c-rap garbage than I agree with you it is garbage. Politics and religion is something we could do without in a chess forum, but than again that is stifling the right to freedom of speech, but we must remember that not all people are as free to discuss things so freely and respect that.....in my own opinion.

1. it does nothing to help develop your pieces besides the rook

2. it does develop the rook but to the wrong area

that I believe is reason enough why not to play 1.a4 I could go on but it is a pointless endeavor.

My greatgrandfather told his son that he didnt know how the heck he was going to get on in life. His son did get on and produced my father. My grandfather told my father, 'son I am really sorry that u to have to live in your age' ( or something to that effect ). That was when tv was just about out in the open. With radio still being listened to in those big wooden boxes ( by the way, how much would such an instrument be worth on the antique market? ). My father did pretty well though. He went to uni(or college however you feel like calling it ) - became a civil engineer - expanded his mind - travelled the world - etc... etc... . My father told me ( several times ) when I was little ' son be careful what you do - who you meet up with - how you lead your life - what you listen to - what you look at on tv - or what you go and watch at the cinemas. The girls you meet. The music these days,' my father said, are really not music at all. These... what you call it... rap... is this music? There are so many sham spectacles out there that you need truly to be careful. ' What do you think my father's son should do? Is my father right? Are tv truly thrash? Is music really but noises?

It is noise, but most kids these days, including myself, find it entertaining.
