Actor Heath Ledger, one of the stars of "Brokeback Mountain, was found dead in bed in a SoHo apartment by his housekeeper Tuesday afternoon in what police are calling a possible drug-related death. He was 28. Sleeping pills were found in the bed around him, police said."Heath Ledger was found dead at 3:26 pm this afternoon," a police spokesperson said

Looks like he was taught to play chess by his parents in Perth.  In 1989, he won the Western Australian State Chess championship, 10 and under section.  He played in tournaments in the under-10 and under-12 divisions in Western Australia.  He took 3rd place in the Western Australia State Chess Championship (not sure of the year).  He was interviewed and was quoted that he played a game of chess every day.  His ex-girlfriend said that his greatest pleasure was playing chess and that he was a chess freak.  He lived near Washington Square Park in Manhattan and played chess there a lot.    Before he died, he was about to direct a chess movie "The Queen's Gambit" from the 1983 book written by Walter Tevis.  He appears as the Joker in the Dark Knight, his last film (he was in 16 films in his life).
