Hello again, we spoke of it a couple of days ago. Since the forum was locked I asked Kohai (I think her replies to our concerns are way the best - I wish all the staff members were like her! ) about it. You shouldn`t be surprised they won`t tell you how many is too many. Since they want to keep Chess.com spamfree they can`t say 5 PMs an hour is OK for all the spammers would know how many they can send out.
How Many Messages Are Too Mqny?
I too have respect for her. However the locking of the topic after making an inaccurate assertion soured it a bit without letting other party respond. And her response was totally inadequate.
If you are going to expel a member mechanically, then at least tell what the numbers are. Else, do it intelligently.
In this case kohai insinuated that the admins account was closed either due using personal messages for inviting people to the group. But she gave no clear reason. Just saying "then don't send so many messages" is no solution. As part of work allocated to the admin, they need to contact our members. Nowhere does chess.com policy prohibit that. A request to be informed 'how many are too many' is reasonable and justifiable. Kohai or any other staff's refusal to answer this in forum or reply to a personal message in unfortunate. Locking the topic without any proper conclusion to the problem raised in help & support forum also shows staff's high handedness.
It would be impolite to tell you what she replied to me for it was a PM. But you should find out whether their account was closed by the staff or they closed them themselves and if it was closed by the staff ask WHY - spamming (or sending too many PMs) is not the only reason an account can be closed for. Just send her a PM.
Spamming, stalking, and scam messages are a big problem on the Internet. I haven`t encountered it here yet but who would write obscene messages to a married man of my age? But ask women here! Two female friend of mine had to close their accounts and create new "male" ones for they were sick of all those "I`ve just fallen in love with you" (and worse) PMs. No wonder the staff`s been doing their best to deal with it.
I do understand someone whose account is suspended due to sending too many PMs to people who want to read them may be upset but I believe such a thing can be discussed with the staff. I enjoy playing Economy Chess and we have to write and send our moves. We wanted to use PMs (I would have sent out at least 30 PMs an hour and received the same number of them) and I am sure that if our accounts had been suspended the staff would have agreed it was not spamming and told us to use either a chat room or meebo next time to avoid problems.
I did send a pm after the thread was locked, but did not get a reply.
If the account was closed due to inappropriate contents, it would not have been re-opened.
My admin tells me he was only sending messages to members of group, requesting them to join team matches etc.
When my own account was closed 14 months back, the first response from staff was same - a copy/paste of "Be Nice...........". Later an apology was sent. So hopefully you can see why I have little faith in this response.
All that I am trying to say to chess.com is : If you wish to close the account for sending too many messages mechanically, at least let us know what "too many" is...
As we speak, lucknow_gambit 's account is closed again! His crime? As far as I know, his only crime was that he was contacting our 1900+ rated players to join the World League match.
Skand, your admins do not have to send out PMs to ask people to join a match. They can use admin tools. When I wanna do so I write a note or post news. Just make sure all your active members are willing to receive such alerts.
Yes, admin "need not" do it. But if he wishes to, it is his prerogative to do so - as long as it does not violate any terms of chess.com.
There are no tools on chess.com to send a message to specific members of a group. Sometimes we do not wish to send a message to 4500 members which is actually meant for just a handful of them.
OK, it looks like a Catch-22 problem or we are living in the Kafka`s world (Kafka was one of our most famous authors although he didn`t write in Czech but in German but I don`t know whether he is known in Asia).
Any idea about how many messages or posts in notes in an hour (or within a given time period) admins can send before their account is closed for spamming? Staff doesn't seem to have an idea on this - at least they are not coming forth with the information. We have been facing this problem on and off and there seems to be no remedy for it. Staff simply says , "don't send too many". But what constitutes "too many" is not defined.
Admins are NOT sending invitation to join group through messages.
