A netbook might be a better proposition, depending on your needs.

I want to know the following, is this good value for what im getting?
Will this laptop run the following games (for my son), Grid racing driver, The settlers 6, Age of empires 3, Far Cry 2?  all on high settings?
Is there a laptop that would outperform this one for the same money?
    cheers anyone!

One approach is to go to an online buying site such as Dell, and step through the basic attributes (i.e. Processor, Microsoft Operating System*, LCD, Video Card, Memory, Hard Drive, Optical Devices).

That way, you see how much each decision costs (e.g. Memory: 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, 6GB or 8GB).

For each attribute, they have a profile (e.g. Basic/Casual Gaming; Extreme/Multi-Threaded Gaming; Multimedia Viewing; Multimedia Creation; Microsoft® Windows® 7; Future-Ready). Depending on what you want to use the system for, you select the appropriate profile - and that tells you how much of the resource you should buy.

    * or you could go Apple Mac or Linux.

Simon that laptop is is plenty enough to run those games quite well. The graphics card is a very good one. Personally i would try to find an I7, but that would add an extra 6 to 700 more onto the price. I would also avoid McAfee® SecurityCenter, you are better of taking that option off and installing AVG. Which was ranked the 2nd best anti-virus available for 2010.
