I am going to put my 2 cents into this discussion as a person from another country.( Canada ). In my province you cannot smoke in any public building , nor any eating establishment, nor any public drinking establishment. You also cannot smoke anywhere in or around your place of work. All these places you have to be at least 30 feet away from the building. Now all this strikes me as just a tad hypercritical ,seeing as the government makes loads of money off of what is essentially an ADDICTION !!! I did not ask to be addicted. When I started smoking I had no idea that it was addictive.(1967) I might also point out that alcohol kills way more people and damages more lives then smoking, but where is the government on that issue. Oh, I forgot , There is  that  money  thing  again.  I  wonder  where are nonsmoking  brethren  are  on that issue.

Most non-smoking laws I understand (no restaurants, other public places). But bars? You're here to injest a poisonous liquid and possibly have sex with a stranger, but you don't want to get any second hand smoke?

But alot of smokers have a different subconcious reason for smoking. Like... to reveal hidden laser traps.

We don't need an 'excuse' for smoking. Its a legal activity that people have engaged in for ages, the health concious can stick to whatever they're doing, and we'll stick to what we're doing. Trying to prevent it seems just so 'police-state'y.

I don't understand the health argument though, I mean, you think telling a smoker that smoking harms him is gunna make him turn around and say "Holy Crap, I didn't realise! I thought they were cleaning my lungs."

I really don't care how much smoking harms smokers, but I care if I have to breathe unfiltered second hand smoke and get lung cancer. One reason people look down on smokers is that they harm others just to feed an addiction.

The government is taking advantage of innocent citizens by selling and advertising a highly addictive drug. It's all a scam. Just like the lottery is a scam. The government makes money off of innocent citizens who buy lottery tickets. The winners pay so much in taxes that they really don't win much money at all. Let's say you win one million dollars in a lottery. You have an option of receiving it over maybe 10 years, or getting it right then. If you collect the prize immediately, you don't receive the whole amount. So you'd get maybe $700,000 dollars. Then you have to pay a huge luxury tax right then, which would be maybe $200,000 dollars. So already you've lost half of the prize. Then you have to pay huge luxury taxes annually for owning so much money. Soon, you'd have nothing left. It's all a scam!!!!!!!!!!!

You would have to pay $200,000 out of $700,000, leaving you with $500,000, which is 50% of $1,000,000. That's what I meant.

I'm all for the bar scene having the right to keep the puffers puffing indoors and in the recent past enjoyed a nice cigar while playing chess with a Scotch in hand. Second hand smoke never bothered me when in the party mode. At least I was prepared for it unlike the dam car exhaust I constantly gag over while walking through the city every day..

That said I no longer drink or smoke. Call me a bore..

I'm starting to think I am a hypocrite now because thanks to a very limited amount of will power and a plethora of nicotine losenges, I haven't smoked since April 1st.
