Apathy? Perfect. Concern for one's brother is the beginning of knowledge. Chess is just a small part of life, a meaningless part actually.

I guess the people who reported the story - enough to list it at least. Brings to mind the 'who is my neighbour' story from the Bible. Is a person a thousand miles away my neighbour? Distance makes the heart grow weaker - is this a problem with the 'condition of man' or a problem with the technology of man? When we lived in villages and could know people we could empathise with them all - with the access we have now to the lives and stories of millions around the globe, is it wrong to be unable to empathise with them all???
