I saw promos for a new sport. It is a combination of Martial Arts and Chess. They play chess for a round and then fight for a round and repeat. An opponent may lose the match either in the ring or at the chess board.

I think the chessboard should be smack right in the middle of the martial art matto, who knows, maybe the two opponents will fight gently to not disturb the pieces or maybe they will fight like hell and discard the board and the pieces or maybe they will sit down and play zen chess and forget about the fighting. By the way you forgot to mention which martial art, this is important as it has a tremendous impact on the answer I can give.

Some types of martial arts are listed below, which one are you referring to?

    You can now meditate!!

I wouldn't call it trash sports. Both chess and MMA are respected sports these days, perhaps MMA more so. It's a test of the total person, physically and intellectually.

I've watched some of the Boxing chess on you tube. Entertaining if nothing else, although I think the boxing skill takes precedent. I'd be curious to see which GM would do best. If he had enough ability to whether the storm in boxing, he might do OK.

I'd watch GM boxing, for sure!  But this chess boxing seems to be an odd fad to me. Gimmicky.  We'll see, maybe it'll catch on!

I'm a chess player (still learning with a long way to go!) and an MMA fighter.

There is a lot in common between the art of chess and mma.  Both require wits, patience, skill, implementation of a plan, a kind of "muscle"/aggression, ability to defend and attack, learning to use several methods and tools, etc

Here is a pic from my last fight.  I'm not finished with the king piece tattoo on my right leg.
