I haven't had a TV for years. Last one I had, I picked it up and threw it on the ground.

But, yes, I've been surprised. For instance, I didn't know that V for Vendetta or Sin City, were based upon comics when I saw them.

Did you actually go to all of the trouble of carrying it out the door or did you just chuck it out the window?

We went to see Roger Waters in concert last night performing The Wall. Isaac is obsessed with Pink Floyd. We watched The Wall (1982) the night before the concert.

When someone close to you is really into a movie, it is hard to judge it objectively. I find it to be a compelling story, especially the way Pink reacts to the loss of his father. There are a few parts I don't quite get, though.

I found the concert pretty compelling, too. Early on, photos of people killed in war (soldiers, civilians, activists) started being displayed along with a few facts such as DOB, date the person died, where they were from, where they died, etc. I felt the concert was a much stronger statement about the horrors of war than the movie was.

    The Power Principle(2012)

Another outstanding documentary from Scott Noble! I've watched it twice in the last week. It reviews some of the history of U.S. imperialism, supporting dictators and fascism, and destroying democracies all over the world, while feeding that world a concatenation of lies. It's a superb film worthy of anyone's time. I have the highest praise for Scott Noble documentaries, and this may be his best!

If you wish to view it, it is split into three parts in the link below: "Empire", "Propaganda", and "Apocalypse".

    Cool!  Thanks.

Saw Solaris (1972), the Russian version, last week.  Been meaning to for years.  I mean, *years.*  It was like that seemingly long wait to lose your virginity, and then one night you have the opportunity, and even if you want to be hanging out with your friends, you say, dammit, tonight I'm going to do it, and after you lose your virginity, you lose it with some more people, and your friends accept that you're not the most available friend any more, and you apologize and try to make it up to them, but Baskin & Robbins is a poor substitute for physical and emotional absence, so you slow down and hang out with your friends, but now you're a slut and they look at you differently, especially the ones who are saving themselves for that special person, and you look at them like they're crazy, but to keep harmony within the group of friends, nobody really talks about it except behind each others' backs, so everybody fakes liking each other at parties, and finally you have enough of the unspoken crap, and you say, let's go to a fucking movie.

    Or something like that.

Anyway, Solaris is a psychological film--it's Russian, what else.  :)  Great movie.  Funny thing is that the Polish author of the novel hated the movie, the Russian director (Tarkovsky) thought it was his worst film, yet it was one of the few movies the Soviet Union released to the West.

I leave it to Salman Rushdie to summarize his thoughts on the film...and the then upcoming American version of it.  lol

Salman Rushdie calls Solaris "a sci-fi masterpiece", and has urged that "This exploration of the unreliability of reality and the power of the human unconscious, this great examination of the limits of rationalism and the perverse power of even the most ill-fated love, needs to be seen as widely as possible before it's transformed by Steven Soderbergh and James Cameron into what they ludicrously threaten will be '2001 meets Last Tango in Paris.' What, sex in space with floating butter? Tarkovsky must be turning over in his grave."

"Lisav"...I feel like we now know so much more about you Laughing...LOL

...so I finally made it to see "The Avengers"...true story...we paid for the 3D movie (of course)...sat down...put on our 3D glasses and...what the hell...this is not 3...this is only 2D. So I went to the Manager to complain...she refunded us our money...and we also got free passes...which I used the next day to see The Avengers 3D.

For those who love a superhero movie...this was fab...

Sunshine (2007) started out to be a pretty original looking sci fi. Initially I enjoyed it. Then the plot line started to get a little too complicated and the characters started to die in ways that were a little too spectacular. I'd give it about a C.

@Lisa: Goodness you're funny!Laughing I saw both versions of Solaris. Tarkovsky's is betterWink

@jesterville: I'm glad you finally got to see your movieLaughing

@corrijean: I was very disappointed with "Sunshine". It started off so well, then unexplainably turned into a slasher film.

Lisav- wow..did you recently go to a high school reunion or what . I can't think of what else could trigger such an  intense association of memories.  Or maybe it was just some old fashion mind altering drugs .

Nice piece of writing, Lisa. I love your candor and humor and your willingness to share those moments from your youth. Earlier youth; you're still young!

Watched the film - Ladri di Biciclette (The Bicycle Thief)  (1948) last night.  Excellent movie that takes place in Italy right after WWII . The movie has a simple plot line involving a man who is the head of household in a very poor family. He has been out of work for over a year and finally gets a job as someone who hangs advertising posters on the walls around the city. The only problem is that he needs a bicycle for the job.  The boy who plays Bruno ,the man's young son, is superb . While watching this movie and seeing how hard the conditions were after the war, one can't help but realize what a freakin spoiled society we have become and what a ridiculous sense of entitlement many of us have.
