I just read that Peter Jackson has agreed to produce a 2-film version of The Hobbit. There were rumors...but now they are confirmed. The films will be made simultaneously, as LOTR films were. No release date as of yet...

I just read the 1st would be released in 2010, the 2nd in 2011.  No Director named yet, but one possibility was Sam Raimi.  That would be cool- him or Rob Zombie.

you might want to re-read The Hobbit then, LOTRs picks up where The Hobbit left off, at Bilbo's birthday party.

the end of the Hobbit and Bilbo's party were many years apart.  The Hobbit didn't end at B's b'day party.

Sure.

Balin, Gandalf, and Bilbo are talking and smoking at the end of the Hobbit. Frodo is never mentioned in the entire book, as I remember.

That's awesome that they are making the movie. How sure are we that it will be Peter Jackson? Darrin thinks that no director has signed on yet. Whoever it is, they can't make it as dark as the LOTR films. The Hobbit is much lighter. There are scary parts, but if they make it like they did LOTR, the whole mood behind the story will be lost. Bilbo's view of the world is much lighter, so the whole story is just a big adventure. Most importantly, they cannot treat the ring as evil. To Bilbo, the ring is just a magical ring that makes you disappear. Even Gandalf treats it as rather harmless. They must avoid the temptation to foreshadow Frodo's quest, when Bilbo discovers the ring. The fact that his finding the ring is an innocent occurrence is very important.

they should make LOTR chess sets. In fact, they should bring out a new version of chess with a wizard piece that can move anywhere, but only once...

Peter Jackson is NOT directing; he is producing. Sam Raimi is one name mentioned as possible director, but that may interfere with the Spider Man franchise. Gandalf is probably already cast, as Sir Ian McKellen  was one of the main people pushing for The Hobbit to be made. Ian Holm (Bilbo in LOTR) had done a BBC Radio version, and did the short segment where he finds the Ring in LOTR, but is probably too old to play the role now.

I want to see Smaug! I wonder whose voice he will have. Also, the entire company of dwarves and the battle scene at the end should be good. Oh, and the trolls...gotta have the trolls.

It will definitely be much lighter and kid friendly, as the story is more of a fairytale type adventure rather than a save the world type epic like LOTR.

James Earl Jones could do the voice of Smaug.  "No., Bilbo, I am your Father... Join me at my side and together we can crush this rebellion and rule the... Oh wait, wrong movie, sorry."

I like that Darrin...hehehe. I'm thinking it will have to be English. PULEASE, don't suggest Sean Connery. He did the voice in that horrible dragon movie a few years ago. Maybe Christian Bale? Hmm...the Dark Knight as a Dragon??

There is an official Lord of the Rings chess set.  Pretty nice but pricey.

As for cast/director: please keep anyone even remotely associated with the recent Star Wars trilogy far away from it.  Lucas & Co. will just turn it into a big FX insipid mess.
