I have to ask the question.... have you ever been outside the USA?

Ive been in 29 countries in the last 4 years and I'd have to say the USA ranks about 28th on the list.

My favorite country is either Austria or Thailand and the best city in the world is Vienna or Bangkok.

In general, I need to see more of the world. So far, the best city I've ever lived/studied in was Melbourne, Australia, easily.

You dont need to worry... no self respecting yankee would set foot in the south. Its like the land time ( and the civil rights movement) forgot. There is a reason why "dixie" has the lowest rates for education, the highest unemployment rates, highest rates of violent crime, and the highest amount of people on welfare while contributing the least to the program... there is a reason the rest of the US makes fun of the south... hell even kansas cracks jokes at your expense..... fact of the matter is the Yanks carry your asses.

Education rankings by state 2006-2007

Alabama  45th

Georgia  41st

Louisiana 44th

Mississippi 48th

*Top 20 slots are dominated by "Yankee" states

What a liar! There are millions of yankees retiring in such states as Florida. Highest crime rates in Dixie? Another lie. Places like NYC, DC, LA and Chicago lead the nation in violent crime ........NONE of those are in Dixie. As for racism in the US if the South is a lot more racist than the rest of the country you will have to explain why all Dixie states are 30% black or more...??  Seems they dont agree with you or they would move.

Yes many snowbird yankees retire in Fl but they retire in southern florida like Boca and South Beach where its to expensive for most dixies to afford to live.... think of it like a yankee outpost. All the benefits of yankee living with the added bonus of warm weather. We leave Jacksonville or Orlando ( aka the armpit of Fl) for the dixies to move too.

And as for the most violent crime... I agree NYC, DC, Chicago and LA beat out the Dixie but only because they have a larger populations. Every study ever done per capita ( generally per 100K residents) has the south with the highest rates of violent crime and property crime which just goes to show you that people in dixie will steal anything you dont bolt down. Altanta, GA is particularly bad.

Here is some reading material from US census Bureau

And the answer to why the south as so many african americans is easy.... decendants of freed slaves. You are the guys that were buying a lion's share of them back in the day.  Only makes sense to settle there after they were given freedom.

Perhaps the South was buying the lion's share of slaves, but who was selling them? I will give you a couple of hints: the slaves were brought over on ships called "yankee clippers" and the hub(s) of the US slave trade were places like Boston and NY....DUH

The subject of this thread is very subjective ofcourse and if you ask a thousand people you are likely to get a thousand different answers. I have only lived in 3 countries so I can only honestly say which was the best (to me) of those three. How many countries have you lived in?

I never said our hands were clean of the whole slavery mess.... most of our founding fathers had slaves... it was acceptable at that time to do so.

Im just saying most of them ended up in the south and so when they were emancipated they settled there.
