He was only two years old! Well, as they say, the greatest die young.

Poor Paul, I really liked him, he would have made so much money if he was betting on the world cup games he predicted correctly.  May he rest in peace - two years is a quite good age for an octopus, seems like he had a happy life in the German seaworld.
