Reb, supermarkets in my area have changed their signs to say "About 10 items or less." which seems to indicate 11 is ok.

Also, your other logic is flawed. If the sign says 10 and 11 or 12 doesn't bother me, that doesn't mean that 13 can't bother me.

I have found there's a stronger correlation to number of *transactions*, and not number of *items per transaction* to how long one waits in line. 10 people with an average of 4 items in the Express lane or 1 person with 50 in the "slow" lane? Go with "Alice" (from the Brady Bunch show): it doesn't take that long to swipe items; it takes most people effing *forever* to pay. Besides, "Alice" is organized and the 10 dopes in the Express lane are just back for stuff they forgot the other day or they're stoned and buying munchies. Get my drift? I'm not sure where the equilibrium point is in the equation to tip it one oway or the other, but you'll get a feel for it if you practice. Just don't be a slave to your item count.

I knew this and only put the question up in a tongue in cheek type of way, but thanks for your detailed reasoning.

Another pet hate I have is chess books that say something like, secrets of the chess openings, A secret by definition is something that is hidden. There are no hidden moves on the chess board!!!!

In Portugal there is another very irritating problem in grocery stores that I never experienced in the US. Here the customer bags their own stuff and if you pay before you are finished bagging everything the check-out person will begin running the next customers' items down amongst yours so you have to be careful not to take any of theirs while being sure to get all of yours. I have solved this problem by NEVER paying until I am finished bagging everything which seems to irritate them. Oh, and on top of that you often have to pay for the bags too in many places.

I am not a chess pro. Many titled players arent chess professionals and probably most NM's aren't.

Good grief, people. The amount of emotional energy you are wasting on trivia is astounding.  Don't like standing in line at the grocery? Think about the cities and the countries where there are no grocerie stores, or groceries to put in them. Don't like boards that are set up wrong? How about having to play with pebbles in the dirt? Don't like wacked out drivers? Neither do I, but they aren't as bad as car bombs.

Get a little perspective. The entire idea of "Pet Hates (or Peeves)" is appalling.

I hate it when people talk about their religious beliefs and get shouted down for it under the reason of "tolerance."

Cellosubmarine: Something you must come to realize sooner or later is that humans, no matter how good they might have it, will ALWAYS find something to whine about.

I am always behind someone who pays with checks. But I laugh at the dumb stuff in the tabloids and the overpriced candy.

Pet peeves or pet hates, it all depends on what country your from. As the flag next to my name suggests, I'm from England, therefore pet hates lol!

As for it being trivia, well thats what it's supposed to be. Tongue out

Chacun a son gout. Enjoy your hates (sounds oxymoronic, no?).  Happy Holidays, even though I already missed Hanukah.

I have many pet hates. Little annoying jabs into my overwise lovely life. Here is a few.

The word "Nicely". It just doesn't sound like a realy word to me for some reason.

Glitter... it gets everywhere.

People who have a bulldog (or something equally as disgusting) and ask, "Isn't it cute?"

People who pronounce the letter H as "haych" not "aych".

Really hot days where I cannot eat, think or wear goth clothes.

People who wear pink shirts. Well actually I believe it is the pink shirt that annoys me rather than the person in it.
