"opening explorer coming soon "
now im really looking forward to this ,i dont know how its going to work but im eagerly awaiting it ! how soon is soon ??
Excellent News!!
If it's anything like the Opening Explorer on chessgames.com, that will indeed be awesome. I have to admit their OE is pretty cool. I love the +/=/- percentages it shows. Very nice.
Glad to be supporting the cause. :-)
Afraid i've nothing useful to say other than to add my excitement to the list of those looking forward to this cool addition to the site :)
Out of interest, if percentages are added, will all the games played on this site be added to that on the fly or every so often or not at all? Cheers!
If they are, hopefully it's not to the same database. Ideally, if chess.com games are going to be included, they will be searchable seperately from master level games.
The opening explorer on chessgames.com is actually quite minimal and I hope the chess.com staff is ambitious enough to make something better. Giving the percentages of each of the moves is nice, but doesn't nearly tell the whole story. A good database program gives you information like the average rating of the players playing the move, and the performance rating of the move. The performance rating is like the win % except that it takes into account the quality of the opposition.
Another potential pitfall of winning % is that a move might enjoy success for a long time until someone discovers a good counter. The counter move is played a couple times at high level, now everyone knows it, and the original move is not played anymore. In your database this original move will always have a high win % despite the fact that your opponent is likely to know how to counter it. It would be nice to have an opening explorer that can report on the recency of results as well.
Are you still in the midst of processing the 3 million games or has that task been completed at this point? It would be nice to have a bit more information about when you project we'll be able to finally use the tool.
Thanks.
