If it's anything like the Opening Explorer on chessgames.com, that will indeed be awesome. I have to admit their OE is pretty cool. I love the +/=/- percentages it shows. Very nice.

Glad to be supporting the cause. :-)

Afraid i've nothing useful to say other than to add my excitement to the list of those looking forward to this cool addition to the site :)

Out of interest, if percentages are added, will all the games played on this site be added to that on the fly or every so often or not at all? Cheers!

If they are, hopefully it's not to the same database. Ideally, if chess.com games are going to be included, they will be searchable seperately from master level games.

It took me a while to figure out for sure which percentage was for Black winning when entering the moves for Black on the ChessGames.com explorer.  I'm a little embarrased to admit that.  Will this be clear on the chess.com explorer?

The opening explorer on chessgames.com is actually quite minimal and I hope the chess.com staff is ambitious enough to make something better. Giving the percentages of each of the moves is nice, but doesn't nearly tell the whole story. A good database program gives you information like the average rating of the players  playing the move, and the performance rating of the move. The performance rating is like the win % except that it takes into account the quality of the opposition.

Another potential pitfall of winning % is that a move might enjoy success for a long time until someone discovers a good counter. The counter move is played a couple times at high level, now everyone knows it, and the original move is not played anymore. In your database this original move will always have a high win % despite the fact that your opponent is likely to know how to counter it. It would be nice to have an opening explorer that can report on the recency of results as well.

Who would said that chess.com is still in beta version.I am curios about transformation from beta.I don't belive in perfect...perfect men or perfect things, perfect political sytem etc...but with so big enthusiasm is possible to come very near from perfect and we can just say it is perfect because then will never be any more good possible ideas.Does that mean chess.com will be perfect? No! But we have right to call it perfect because we are just the people.

Following up to see where things are at with the opening explorer.  It's just about May and I'm sure I'm not the only one checking back daily for a new menu item to appear :).  Has development run into some additional hurdles or are you guys just running some final QA on the code before deployment?

we're basically done with it. but we have to process all of the games that will be part of the database. that has taken much longer than expected :) we have to process about 3 million games at about .3 seconds per game ;)...

Are you still in the midst of processing the 3 million games or has that task been completed at this point?  It would be nice to have a bit more information about when you project we'll be able to finally use the tool.

Thanks.

we're mostly done with code and games. now we're just waiting for the server to arrive, get installed, push the code onto it, QA it, push it live for some beta testers, integrate navigation, and then tell everyone :D
