Which is more common? What are some of the characteristics of both? Which one are you?

I'm a positional player, but as kingsmate said I can only do this style successfully because of the foundation in tactics as advanced plans don't matter if you're still dropping pieces all the time.

Positional is about making a strategy and going for small gains and sometimes it takes lots of moves to do it. Like for example trying to win the two bishops or gaining space on the queenside.  Usually this is a safe way to play.

Tactical players spend most of their time with studying long combinations and trying to make complications in their games. They like to make long strings of forced moves to wipe the opponent out. They like to attack and are usually willing to give up material to do so. However, they don't like quiet positions and can sometimes try to create complications unfavorably.

Then, I guess I'm a little bit of both! :)
