Interesting. I guess this is the best answer so far. Going back to prehistoric times when people used to spend all of their time hunting, eating, mating and sleeping there really was not time for chess. It is only because we have spare time that chess can exist.

Chessis a game, this is why.

Why is baseball, soccer, tennis, golf...?

Because people need to have activities and select games that where created or new games created.

All humans have a ludique side to their life and it's called playing.

Playing what, you decide what you like.

Chess is, because without chess great minds would have to do something productive with their time in order to stay stimulated. Chess slows down progress in the fields of science and technology. It is the only thing keeping the world from advancing at such an incredible speed that literally no one would be able to keep up. Chess is the glue that holds our world together. Now go play chess, and if you suddenly get a new idea about string theory, keep it to yourself.

He who gives himself entirely to his fellow-men appears to them useless and selfish; but he who gives himself partially to them is pronounced a benefactor and philanthropist.
