I have read all the comments about abusive language.
I was given the "F" word by a player recently just because I won the game. Of course, I reported the matter to admin' and was surprised to discover that the guy who used the "F" word towards me is STILL an active player on this site!! I have, in the past, suggested to admin' that a "Bad Word Filter" be installed to eliminate ANY expletive before it even hits the screen. This of course has not happened and the trend continues! Another chess site that I use has such filters in place and, should anyone use foul language, the words are automatically deleted from view and a warning is sent to the offender! I know, it happened to me once quite by accident and so innocently too.
I told a friend in the USA about a comedian we used to have here in England, his name was D*** Emery. D*** being an abbreviated name for Richard (*ick) here, (not sure about other countries) No harm in that you may say, just telling someone over the pond about a famous comedian....mmm, think again!!
Their filters are THAT sensitive and NOTHING gets through!!
The moral of my story is, Chess.com could take that same positive step to ensuring a friendly, non-abusive site where ladies and gentlemen/boys and girls of tender years too, could enjoy expletive-free chess & chat enjoyment.
PS. What amazed me about the guy that bad-mouthed me was that Chess.com never even issued a short term ban on him!! He was allowed to continue playing immediately after I had reported it to admin' and received their thanks for doing so. He was not suspended nor banned! Much could be done by the site to improve this situation and that would eliminate the need for members/guests bickering amongst themselves on this subject and avoid a vast amount of negativity!

I'm with you on that, Elusive!!
Thanks "Boss" :))

Personally, I don't use foul language on this site and don't appreciate it. Maybe it is because I'm older. It's mostly the younger players that use it. Recently a kid used the f-word on me and called me a d***head for beating him. At first I got angry and fired back a smart remark (no foul language). He got a kick out of the reply and I finally realized he was just kidding around. Not being abusive. Us older guys maybe just have to accept that the younger players have a different sense of humor than we do. I was initially angry, but ended up getting a kick out of the kid as we chatted during our second game.
My point is that the times they are a changing and maybe we older guys need to cut the younger guys a little slack on the language. ( I sent the kid a Shakespeare trophy with the caption "You have a way with words.")
You miss my point - this was the guy's sense of humor, not mine. I could have gotten mad or reported him and I never would have understood what he was doing. I actually ended up getting a kick out of him.
I think there should be a potty mouth desination for those who use foul language. Then us "G" rated players could avoid them and they could exchange vulgarities with their contemporaries.
I can of course accept that the younger end may indeed have a sense of humour which differs from ours but, are you really suggesting that any of us, no matter what age we are, have to accept disrespect and expletives from any young moron who, because of his/her lack of vocabulary, should want to sound off at us in any way they think fit? They should be made to feel totally embarrassed and humiliated by their actions and this could be done by Chess.com applying a lifetime ban on them. That would ensure that those of us who wish to converse intelligently and act respectfully towards each other are allowed to do so without the interference of foul-mouthed morons whose only aim in life is to disrupt the enjoyment of others!!

I think a lifetime ban's excessive for a first offense of merely having a potty mouth.
Perhaps a warning for the first time, a week's ban for the second, a month for the third and only on the fourth do they receive a lifetime ban.
They may have some redeeming qualities, so I urge consideration be given to: Instead of a complete ban, their chat privileges could be withdrawn while they're still allowed to play here.
Whoa! Isn't calling someone a "moron" pretty abusive, too?
I wonder, would an 'old moron' be found less offensive?
(opening post) " it happened to me once quite by accident and so innocently too. "
Yet, he's wanting this site to impose a permanent ban on his offender. Curious.
Not in this particular case! What other word could be used to describe a disruptive foul-mouthed individual whose only aim in life is to cause unrest between a group of respectable chess players such as ourselves, I am really surprised that I need to even qualify that last remark :)
Well good sir, thanks for your input. I have no desire to get confrontational with my comments on this matter but, my stance remains unchanged! I do not purport to be a stuffy English gent, nor am I in any way a "Killjoy" but, a difinitive line has to be drawn between what is right and what is totally unacceptable! Your comment about giving them FOUR chances to hurl abuse before they are struck off I find rather absurd!
As for your suggestion "They may have some redeeming qualities" well, that I find very difficult to accept I'm afraid! The problem is, we have far too many do-gooders in society today that show leniency towards offenders in the hope that they will eventually reform themselves and become "pillars of the community" Not so my friend. I have seen far too much for me to be swayed into believing that these sick minds can be cured, just take a look at this world today!!
Clearly from the nature of your reply, you're not my 'friend'.

Good god, in the two or so years I've been here, this has gone from an interesting chess forum to a bunch of whining. Whining about staff, whining about language, whining about changes, now me whining about whining.
It needs to stop!
I truly agree sir, let's all hug and make up :)
As I stated in my previous reply to you, I have no desire to get confrontational over this bad language issue. Each of us are entitled to voice our opinions in an open forum such as this. I like to wear a smile and be friendly towards everyone I am privileged to meet.
Even friends can agree to differ sometimes surely?
Have a great week :)

You seem like a nice and honest guy. And, i can understand your point of view.Though, i would prefer that the filtering be an optional setting. After all, you livein Yorkshire;I live in Cleveland. You're not going to hear things like "let's all hugand make up" around here.

I would imagine that most people, including myself, find it somewhat funny that people post things out of anger at losing some blitz/bullet games. For me it is a case of sticks and stones: unless someone was to direct a huge slur of personal abuse for a prolonged time, I am fairly certain I will not beome emotionally traumatised running off to find an admin to console me.
Certain words will always offend some people more than others. The idea of being able to have an optional filter would be nice, and I could remain entertained while others could cut it out totally. With that in mind, I think a very hard line stance on bad language would be silly. Don't tar every player with the same brush, not every player will mean it to hurt, and some may just snap after a really bad day. A couple of warnings then muted, with steadilly progressive sanctions seems fairest.
Hello and thanks for the compliment, I make every effort to do my Christian duty in being friendly and polite to all the folks I am fortunate enough to meet:) I quite agree with your suggestion and I support any effort by the site that is conducive to eradicating the use of foul language on here. It really isn't necessary. WOW, you live in Cleveland, a lovely coastal place to be, that is somewhere I have never been as yet. I have been lucky enough to visit USA on many occasions and always found your countrymen to be warm and friendly towards us Brits so, the latter part of your message is difficult for me to comprehend!
