Hello fellow citzens on chess.com,
Here is my suggestion, is it possible in the near future to bet on chess com?
It would be nice to have a space on live chess for instance where you can play and choose a bet for the game with your opponent.
It could be anything from a couple of euro/dollars to maybe hundreds why not?
What do you think about?

Probably all sorts of legal problems!

People would cheat.
king_warrior
exatly! That is very good idea, but only if cheating could be stoped. Chess.com would be even more popular and number of members would grow up
Cheat can be detected in many ways and you can also have a web cam on the user interface.
Also your ratings and elo should be taken account and your average performance.
Legal problem? I don't think so people play poker with money on internet and bet almost on any stupidity on and off line those days

Playchess.com has implemented the "Play for Ducats" system a long time ago. The results:
- few people use it
- the stakes are usually too low - the prevailing majority of the games are for 3-5 ducats (30-50 cents)
- even given the abovementioned a lot of people cheat, e.g. use chess engine assistance or share their accounts. It's entertaining to see a 2000-level amateur (officially) beat one GM after another when playing for stakes

I think gambling is one of the worst vices...but I guess if two people opt for it, then who am I to stop them?
I once read a quote that said something to the effect of: chess is so pleasurable that it requires no other incentive to play.

It seems like online cheating might ruin the betting game for online chess sites.
I almost agree with you my friend but please don't forget that professional players on tournaments do play for money and sometimes for lots of money.
Chess it's a sport and like football or car racing you are free to decide to play for your own pleasure or for money and I personally don't see nothing wrong with it.
This is quite interesting Natalia, I didn't know about that, thanks for sharing.
Nonetheless I still personally think this is going to be the future, surely there are lots of things to be done and to be taken onto account. Let's make an off line example just to be clear, if you go to Las Vegas it's full of "professional cheaters" around but this does not mean they are shut the city down just because of that ;-)
You must manage to have an accettable security level and pay people to do that job for you in terms of software/hardware and humans "check in" involved.
You will never 100% secure but if you can reach a legitimate security level it can be done.....
If people can buy islands on Second life I mean....I don't really see no reasons why others should not play chess and bet on it if they will.......;-)

It would hardly be gambling. Chess is a game of skill, not roulette. I'd be all for this if it weren't for the cheating aspect (and sandbagging). Unfortuntely that will become a big problem and so I don't think it's feasible.
BTW: If not in excess, gambling is just like going to a movie or whatever else people do for fun. Unless it's a game of both luck and skill, people probably expect to lose and consider it the fee for their enjoyment. Anyway, I've never even gambled at slot machines so I might not be the best person to talk about this. I just don't think it's fair to be so quick to judge and I'm absolutely against governments deciding what adults can do with their money.

I love chess

Nope, the legalities won't allow online chess betting.

I'm sure there are ways to prevent the government from infringing upon our freedom to do as we please with our money just like there are ways to get around the government infringing upon other rights. I personally don't know all the legal facts though, it might be okay legally under certain circumstances. Competition isn't really gambling is it?

It depends on how you guys want it. It is your money. I have a way out.
