Chess Game Printout

I think it would be a good Idea if there was a button next to games you played where it would print out a diagram of the game and a move list on a sheet of paper so you could just put it in a note book, or maybe save it as a Word document so we could keep them on our computers without having to need a chess program to open them up.

It sounds like a nice idea, but it would be tough to get working. They'd need some sort of plugin that could change FEN into jpgs on the fly - sounds complicated. And then they'd need something to format the PGN into a readable word document format and not just smacked on the page. Some of the best programs aren't good at that and the ones that are aren't good with diagrams. Go figure.

For the time being there is one lightweight program that's good for this.

    Wait - don't leave yet!

    There we go.

Ok it's called chesscat. It's a small chess app for newspaper editing and is great for this sort of thing. You can put in notations, paste on word processors and put in diagrams however you like. The only setback is that you'll have to play with the margins to get it looking just right but it's still a great little app to have.

Thanx for the link, I downloaded. Just one question, the diagrams seem to be in ASCI format, (ie not a picture) Am I missing something?

Be sure to make the diagrams bitmaps (Bmp) when you try to copy them.

Hmm, tried that, still looks like this in my print preview:

Oh ok. The program uses a weird font that creates letters instead of pieces. Weird I know; To use this correctly you need to download a "chess font." It may be easier than my way - I haven't tried it.

What I do is copy and paste the PGN and the bitmaps seperately into Word or whatever.

First go to Edit --> Copy Position As Text and you can drop it in word. I prefer this way because I like the notation to be bold, and you get a bit more flexibility.

Now the diagrams must be thrown in seperately. First scroll to the move you want and then go to Edit --> Copy Position As Bitmap and paste where necessary in word. Word automatically saves the first pic size so the others you import will be the same size. You should get something like this:

    (I skimped on the tags)

    Ah, ok.

I thought it would create a ready to print page.

For creating diagrams, this is also good, been using it for years:

Would be hilarious if there was an option to print out a flip book of a game

Will CB light 2009 do this for you?

I use CB light to record my games every few moves; I'll see if it prints too.

Go to the Chessbase site and it is a free download.

    It will print too.

The version I am using is Chessbase light 2007; I use it to record my moves, insert diagrams and it will print out the game.

The latest version is CB light 2009; I've not looked at the newer version.

    Hope this is useful.

I have just downloaded the latest version, CBlight 2009. There is a fee to pay if you want all the features but for recording your games, inserting diagrams and printing off; looking very professional too!

ok I downloaded chessbase light, but is there a way of importing PGN files or do you have to type out every move?

when you download the PGN file, it will either automatically open in chessbase, or it will ask you what program to open it with...just open with chessbase and you are there.
