i think it would be better to color the "chat box" the same quiet mellow yellow that you use for the alert box.  the sharp whiteness of the "chat box" is like a car headlight on the page.  the alert box color is much more pleasant and is not as disturbing.

I don't think you can change the colour of the chat box, but you can change the colour of most everything else through themes.

I was serious. Chess Mentor messes my eyes up for the same reason you mentioned.  Light green might be good too. I heard green's easy on the eyes.
