Poemander

Concerning the above, font needs to be courier new, regular, size 10, and the style traditional, in Word, for the board position proportions, to tidy up a copy. It then comes up well as PDF booklets. This is an interesting opening, long in disrepute but fun. A case in point for comparing the two encodings, output by CT&PM, as a learning tool for descriptive notation.

It has been some time, but I am revising much, finding many bugs, adding useful capabilities, help facilities more optional, and cosmetics - a slow job with work commitments, but commuting time well spent and more entertaining. Those using what is currently available may be pleased to know a new version is not far away. Databases compiled will be upward compatible, but annotation will be corrected according to CT&PM's Export 8 standard under the Unorthodox Specifications option in the main menu (including ECO tags, nested commentry, traditional punctuation with ! & ?, and such mods as seem dictated by popular useage and utility.)

Of course, retain all original downloaded PGN for recompiling DATABASES in the future, or for reference or other requirements.

Poemander

There are still improvements to be made, help dialogue to be revised, and testing en passant, but the 2.03 release or "Chess Translator & PGN Manager" is now available, and a vast improvement on the previous version. It makes chess study and research easy, using a database of games which it can create for you from downloaded PGN. The Change log with the package will give some idea of the work that has been completed for now. I will continue meanwhile, under less pressure, with the above. Have fun.

The other downloads have also been updated except the concise "Odds Ratings" textbook prototype. I believe this mathematics can allow perfect ranking of chess players across the globe, on the net, in alarmingly short order. Being derived from elementary probability theory, the generated ratings rapidly converge to yield accurate probabilities. The simulator "Swiss Immaculate" verifies its efficacy in tournament practice with transparent calculations.

You may also find many useful features for WAV music to M4A codec conversion, and an array of file and folder management utilities in "Music Converter & Folder Manager".

http://www.swissimmaculate.com/

Hoping to complete (to my satisfaction) CT&PM in the near future. Thanks for your interest and support.

Poemander

There has been a great deal of improvement of fundumental menu routines and other, and elaborate and extensive help facilities, properly formatted, added to almost every one. Also a surprise addition to  our version 3.00, which I am sure will be very much appreciated. This will soon be complete, and your waiting should prove worthwhile. I thought I'd better let you know I'm still alive and well.

How does one denote pieces obtained from pawn promotion in descriptive notation anyway?

For example: 56. f8=Q would be 56. P8KB=Q if I'm not wrong.

Poemander

Here is a game from my 'CURIOS" collection, as produced by CT&PM, which contains promotions. A postition with five queens arises. You will be able to compare the algebraic & descriptive encoding. Set Notepad to font: Courier New, Regular, size 10, if you copy the games, or the board positions will be messed up, as here. The algebraic version, necessarily without board positions, is required for PGN Viewers.

How does one denote pieces obtained from pawn promotion in descriptive notation anyway?

For example: 56. f8=Q would be 56. P8KB=Q if I'm not wrong.

I wasn't referring to the promotion itself, but rather how you then denote moves of the new piece(s) which were obtained from promotion. A new rook, bishop, or knight is neither "king's" nor "queen's", and multiple queens must be discriminated from each other as well.

Not sure I understand where's the problem. Once you promoted a pawn, it simply becomes a piece which is on a 8th rank square. About multiple queens, you discriminate the same way you normally do with rooks or knights. For example:

A translator was the original conception for CT&PM. This is now the root menu option "Game Reader, Writer & Editor". It has now become basically a PGN Database Compiler, Editor & Searching Facility. Also, an Odds Ratings Facility has been added so that Chess Club Organisers can produce MEANINGFUL ratings for their membership. Also, this last allows programmers to quickly master the mathematics required to apply Odds Ratings to Net Based Chess Games for EFFICIENT & ACCURATE universal Ranking.

I had to learn descriptive notation in order to be able to read Kmoch's Pawn Power. Still, I find it pretty cumbersome most of the time and there are only a few instances where I thought that it has its practically useful aspects. The "BxKBP" example is one of those (even though I needed a few moments to understand what it is about), but still I think that it's clear enough speaking of a bishop taking the f-pawn.

do you still say BxKBP if the f pawn is no longer on the f file?

Poemander

What has become "Chess Translator, PGN Manager & Calculator" was originally intended as a translator to descriptive notation. As it developed, it also evolved. It will demonstrate, move by move, pressing the space bar, the translation during PGN file compilation. A rudimentary board & pieces are displayed to follow the game with. Its practical usefulness resided mainly in providing a learning aid for descriptive, to unlock the brilliant books written in descriptive, or to translate them maybe. PGN compiled to the database may be filed again in both notations, and either will (since glitch removed) recompile.

The evolution has extended to allowing many formats, identifying features such as the entire set of "endgames" (all piece combinations excluding pawns for both sides), "positional opening positions" (those arising from the defining variant moves), searching and editing the database(s) compiled from internet PGN, and filtering games to or from the database with an array of criteria possible. As such, it is a tool for researching many aspects of chess, including the evolution of opening theory itsef, or learning how to manage various endgames.

The latest addition, the calculator, is to allow chess club organisers to rate their players & estimate pre-game odds (mentally!). For the sake of mathematicians or programmers, the understanding of how to make such calculations for rating purposes is made abundantly clear by simulation and on screen formulae. But for a bit of shine to come (hopefully few glitches), the project has reached an end otherwise.

A PDF textbook detailing the derivation of the mathematics is now included with the downloadable compressed folder, together with the original USCF Tournament Rules Application & Simulator. There is also a File & Folder Management Application of high power which can clone your Windows "My Music" database from WAV to M4A with artwork & tagging, or alternately, its Playlists, appropriately foldered. Music can be kept lossless, while the clone can serve your phone & car head unit.

Poemander says: "The only other thing you may need for meteoric rise is a mind like Jose Capablanca (observed three games at four years of age, and sat down to win three games against Dad)"

The only evidence that Capablanca learned in that way, and won his first game against his father is his own account of it.  Do we believe it?  If he was not deliberately making it up it could easily be a false memory.  Several things cast doubt on its truth.  First that it is so unlikely that a four year old, on the basis of watching a few games, could beat even the weakest of adult players.  Second, that we do not, in general, have accurate memories from early childhood. Third, there is no end of examples of famous people in all walks of life exaggerating their achievements and experiences, or just making them up.  And finally, when you read Capablanca's account, it just does not ring true.

Poemander

Many a truth does not ring true on the basis of common experience. Worse still is spin from vested interests and centuries of its effects. Every lie is a roadblock in the mind. What are we subject to? What of other "cultures", like the Jews, for instance, and their history, actively suppressed by academics since1900 and long before already contradicted. They exist and much more so. What then, is their history, if you would gainsay? I believe, as did Newton & Einstein (my idea of scientists), that the diversity of humanity is a result of reincarnation. I have met or know of people with strange stories, like memories in their childhood years of dying in the Civil War. What do we know for sure? Research in that direction is not tolerated. It would explain the recorded game by Capablanca at four years and ten months old, but nothing much else will. Neither are Edgar Cayce or Patience Worth (read "The Case of Patience Worth" by Walter Franklin Prince) to be accounted for by "mainstream" thought, if properly reasearched. "Sauron does not share power!"

Game 158 Ramon Iglesias - JRC

Havana, 17 September 1893

(Remove White's queen)

This is Capablanca's earliest recorded game; he was four years and ten months old and too good, even then, to receive odds of the queen. From moves 12-23 he exploits the weaknesses of White's pawn structure - is it possible that he already had a grasp of position play?

These two games of Ramon Iglesias are evidence of the great diversity of talents found throughout humanity (see MAT 25:14-46 KJV for the origin of the current interpreation of the word "talent"). In Chess, proportions of points won between any two players is possible, and ratings based on these measure playing strength. "On the chessboard lies and hypocrisy do not survive long. The creative combination lays bare the presumption of lies; the merciless fact, culmination in checkmate, contradicts the hypocrites." Emanuel Lasker.

"Chess Translator, PGN Manager & Calculator", as it now identifies itself on the title page, is set to expire as a trial version. This encourages the user to update, as it evolves or debugs, from:

http://www.swissimmaculate.com/

The current version will soon be updated. Among improvements, the calculator is currently displaying the draw, which should be represented in highlighted colours as "1/2 (1/2-1/2)", as a win "1(1-0)" instead. Draws, however, are being processed properly. The program is large, complicated and error prone, and testing takes a while. Ignore this erroneous display if you use the calculator meanwhile. Thanks for your interest  and patience.
