Would it be possible to add an" Edit "facility to the chat box similarly to the Topics  facility.... partly due to bad typing skills I too often have to delete the chat message and do lengthy re-typing  to remove ambiguities or typo - type nonsense - making ?

One potential downside with this feature (if implemented) is that someone could abuse their opponent - then edit the chat to remove all trace.

Better be sure of what you have to say before you send it.
