An easy solution would be to start the chat in "disabled" mode. Those really interested should enable it. As it is I haven't experienced a lot of chatter during games.
I encountered a user fairly recently who insulted me after the game (which he won) and then wouldn't play a rematch because I didn't respond.
That was a first.
