I recently got a message for a free trial of a "premium" membership on chess.com. If I create a group during that 10 day trial, will I still be able to control it after the trial ends? Kind of confused...

No, that's for premium members. 

after the trial, chess.com stops it. I might be wrong but it's the common assumption.

You can create a group within that time. Once the premium expires the group will remain, but as a basic member super admin you won't be able to create any team matches or vote chess, and won't be able to accept challenges from other groups.

As NM aww-rats has said, you'd need to go into Manage Members in the group tools and promote a premium member to be super admin until such a time you are a premium member yourself.
