Still a free country but on a private site you have to play by whatever rules the owner decides on.  Muting doesn't last forever and now you know.

I do not have a favorable opinion of Putin but I understand why Chess.com may not want people discussing politics and religion in public forums. Since chess.com has many players from all over the world and many players from former USSR you can expect that people will debate and call each other names constantly and will never stop. No one will care about chess in those threads and there are other forums online for politics discussion. I am a believer in God and the Bible and I wouldn't want to see debates about religion in the forums because it will just be a hate fest between theist and atheists. No one will care about chess in those discussions.

In case of Putin I guess chess dot com knows that many of their players are from Russia and this could create a lot of hate between players. I do not suggest all Russian players would jump to Putin's defense or that all of them would like him. But those who do, can become angry and start debating, and those who dislike Putin will also get angry and will argue with his fans. Plus many people from other countries will have other questionable or controversial opinions. And none of these discussions or opinions have anything to do with chess.

It's like discussions about ethnicity and race. Many players of chess are Jews, many are Muslims, many are Christians. They'll start bashing each other as well. No one benefits from it and I guess most visitors to the site do not care.

Remember also that many chess dot com users are kids. They also don't need to see controversial discussions here.

Are we all mising the Point? Because I believe the freedom of speech is still what Makes us Americans. Why am I not Muted when I make fun of obama, This is not a question about "politics..." this is a question about FREEDOM of Speech.!!!

Maybe in your country it does. here in the US we have something called the "Constitution" which GIVES US AMERICANS the right of Freedom of Speech!!!

As a Member of this great Community, i would like to have the freedom to say, and name, whatever I wish (and of-course no curse words). Would chess.com Mute me because I talk about, for example, the president of guatemala? I dont think that would be the case. Why? I dont know!! Is the president of russia anything special? I wonder!!
