Is there a plan to have a Symbian Application made for chess.com on mobile phones? the normal mobile application is useful, but it could be so much better on smartphones! my phone isnt an iphone its a nokia smartphone and it would be great to have an application that did it justice!

    Hi!

we are discontinuing support for symbian. nokia has abandoned the platform as well. we are focused on android and iphone, and perhaps windows7 as it matures.

    sorry!

That is very bad news. According to Wikipedia, you are abandoning about 30% of the smartphone users:

"Devices based on Symbian accounted for 29.2% of worldwide smartphone market share in 2011 Q1."

A group of freelancers would create a client for echess for about $500. This is just... sad.

the number of those symbian devices that connect to the internet is much smaller. and i've received bids for the app, and it's much much higher.

I won't be renewing my diamond membership, because of your refusal to support symbian mobile chess.  I can't justify the high membership cost, when the site is being so cheap on this issue.

it's not about being cheap. it's about the platform having no future. nokia - the owners of symbian - have given up on it.

i'm sorry to see you go! i hope you'll come back when you get an android, iphone, or windows phone :(

if there are any symbian developers out there who want to take our java code and API and update it to work, please let me know! we have a lot of the pieces...

Not spending time and resources developing for a dying platform isn't cheap, it's smart.

a "dying" platform that will be oficially around for 5 years and much longer for those that don't like other alternatives (me included).  5 years is a lot of time in mobile world.  As i said , there are people that will refuse to jump on to another OS (and with symbian belle and future carla releases you really have no reason to do it) so the decision not to release an echess app for symbian users is really odd .

"Future" is a strange word in the mobile world.

According to Statcounter , based on 09/2009-09/2011 time period.. Symbian is still the king of web traffic.

    Symbian's death is grossly exaggerated.

Crazy , this is a serios discussion. You have the other threads for trolling and playing in the sand. And no , i don't work for nokia.

totally agree with clocky, I still cannot understand why chess.com is not available in symbian.

Me too, I agree with clocky. There are a lot of people that use nokia (me included) and have an account here. Hope the staff change their mind and cooperate with nokia to develop a chess.com application.

if they didn't do it back in the days when symbian was the top used mobile os what chance is they do it now? They didn't even had an app that could allowed live chess on apple store just until recently.  But perhaps we can invest money in useless voting chess games.

that is a very old java app and not optimised at all for touch screens. modern symbian ^3 apps should be done in cute. perhaps it is an alternative for older devices.

Agreed, it is old and isn't optimised for touch support.

Having said that, a free, old app is still better than none at all - especially as there doesn't seem a lot of enthusiasm for writing a new one anytime soon. I've just put it on my Nokia XpressMusic 5800 and it works ok.
