Vacations ?!?

What does this vacation situation really serve anyway?

Someone can go on vacation for a month and return later ? What for? Why did he enter the game to begin with?

So..... i need to wait in a tournament for a couple of months for vacations as i am doing now? Thats very annoying

Also the time controls on this vacation business do not work properly .

In a tournament i play , started Aug 1st, one guy had one month of vacation but 2 months passed and he still has 17 days of vacation left, how is that possible? Thats cheating isn't it?

I dont think playing online chess is a full time job to allow so much vacations. Maybe a week is more than enough max.

Either play it in the time limits or don't play it at all. Why should prompt players or even a whole tournament wait on guys on vacations?

I don't think thats right at all.

This is not FIDE, its just recreational chess right?

    Vacation abuse is a problem.

However, the vacation function itself is very useful.

For instance, I was playing several games recently when I got called out of town for work. I worked several 20 hour days and when I was done I just wanted to hit the bed and sleep. I had no desire whatsoever to think about chess. My vacation time kicked in.

Just this last week, I was playing several games that started a while ago. I was in Moscow (I am from the US) for a week, very poor/inconsistent internet. My games were started before I found out I was going. What was I to do? Quit the games?

Life gets in the way sometimes. It happens. So because life happens we should not play chess?

And as you state in the last line - "This is not FIDE, its just recreational chess right?" It's not like we're playing for the World Championship or a $50,000 prize.

(I looked at your games, you have 3 games on vacation, 9 other active games. Big deal, play the 9 active games.)

I totally understand the situation you describe, and i have no problems with that type of vacation.

However the time spans are too long in my opinion. One month of vacation turns in to 4 months somehow . I dont know how this happens but it happens.

I find it somewhat disturbing to play online recreational games that last half a year as if the players were something really important like world champions

I can play an online game for a month no problem, but after that i get bored and upset with it. Maybe its just me i dont know

Oh, I totally agree with the long time span problem.

What is most infuriating are the ones where the game is absolutely lost, 3 forced moves to checkmate and they go on vaction - but STILL post in the forums and play blitz and bullet games, like 20 or 30 a day.

Yes exactly ! I have seen it happen in tournament games where the whole tournament was delayed for a month due to such behavior of sore loosers.

Just because it's there don't mean you have to tolerate it. If you are 100% sure there's vacation abuse from some individuals either for losing games or others fishy motives, there's always the possibility to submit a ticket in the Help & Support.

If confirmed, the offender will have his stalling game(s) counted as loss and may have a warning/account deletion depending on the level of abuse. And his/her premium membership, if any won't save him...

I don't mind the IDEA of vacations. But chess.com makes them so easy to abuse. e.i. Let your clock run out three days, autovacation, let your clock run out three days, autovacation. Streching 30 days vacation over 120, without moving at all. They could at least require you make one move in each of your games to re-enable vacations. That isn't so greedy.

What varelse1 is describing is what i think its happening with me . Is that an offence?

3 days clock, vacation and the same over and over. Thats how the time span is explained !

Thats stalling the game isnt it? Is that allowed ??

My opponent offered a draw (declined) and then went On vacation . The next day I could not find the game on the system . It was entirely deleted.  How could this happen ?

Scurly, I reported the incident this morning to the Tech Dept. It has to be somewhere in the chess.com data base. I will let you know the outcome.

That's why I only play in, "no vacation" tournaments now.
