Effect of Withdrawing from a Tournament

    I have played in a few tournaments in my area and enjoy them.  I want to play in others, but at my age, my ability level, and that most tournaments seem to start at 9:30-10:30 am, spending all day (8-10 hours) playing chess at a venue suited to other activites (e.g. Vegas, Chicago, Florida) is not somehing that appeals to me.

    Discounting the fact that I have paid an entry fee and may not win any $$ or trophy (should a miracle occur), what effect does it have on the tournament, if any, if:

    1.  I enter for 2-3 days, play a couple of games and withdraw for that day;

    2.  Return and do the same the next day;

    3.  Or, if I am winning or just inclined, to continue to play on either day.

    I would tell the Director of my intent, but I do not want to screw things up.  I just want to play in some rated tournaments, without making a carrer out of it.

    Similar to a golf tournament.  The round(s) doesn't monopolize the entire trip.

    Any thoughts -- suggestions?

    Many tournaments allow byes if the tournament director is notified in advance.  You would have to check with the TD of the particular tournament for the policy.
