    In tournaments where it is open to all player ratings (on chess.com), how are the match-ups assigned? Does is start with similar level vs each other or is it random?

    Go to any tournament page. On the right side you will see a Help link.

    Once in Help look for the topic "How is seeding and group placement determined in multi-group tournaments?".
