Places in multi-round tournaments

Question: How are places beyond the final group determined in a multi-round tournament?

For instance, I'm playing in this tournament, where the max group size is 2.  Once this tournament works its way down to the final round, those two players are either going to be 1st & 2nd, or share 1st place, easy enough.  But how does the system determine who gets 3rd place, 4th place, 5th place, etc.?  I've looked through the help, and I can't find an answer.

    Thanks very much in advance.

You can see the method in completed tournaments.

Players are sorted by round in which they were eliminated. The players are then sorted by score in the round.

    See http://www.chess.com/tournaments/players.html?sortby=standings&id=5415.
