"I was wondering how tournaments work?"

You register for a tournament, then you play the games, more games you win, more games you play and also harder it gets.

Some of the tournaments work in a piramid kinda deal, and some work in a you gotta play all the people. And some are mixed.

    "How do you join one?"

In this website, go to this page: http://www.chess.com/tournaments/

In the real world you need to find a tournament and then contact them to register.

"And is there such a thing as CC tournaments?"

    What CC stands for?

I'm assuming that CC stands for correspondence chess, and it that case the answer is yes. You can find those by following the link posted by htdavidht above. On that page, they're called "turn-based" or "multi-day" tournaments (as opposed to live tournaments).

You can also check the tournaments help page for more info on how tournaments work. It's located here.
