We do not know how long tournaments will last therefore it is unfair to make people not join a tournament because it MAY not finish in time for their holiday.

why then enter a tournament if then put vacations?
It will not be unfair to other players? Even on vacation can not play?

well we are not in real life we are in the computer ....

and the tournament cannot be finished in one sitting only, its like a turn-based (online) game

thats why maybe they made the vacations thing

and one thing many are on vacation(just like my games) cause Its Christmas Holiday and they are enjoying it. ^_^

guess so

lol :)

I have no issue with vacations in your average open seek or challenge however, I have to say its quite discouraging in tournaments as it affects a lot more people.  Currently in one tournament I'm in one person is on vacation and its not only holding up the 3 of us in our group but its also holding up the second round as we have yet to advance anyone in our group yet.

I quit a tournament after 5 or 6 months of waiting - the tournament was not even 50% complete at that point!  Given that some tournaments could take more than a year to finish, to expect players to be available consistently throughout is totally unreasonable.  Also, if you are truly on vacation, there are many places you could go and have no internet access.

Vacation during a tourney is not really that big a deal I would have thought.

Basically, I agree with Nytic.

I would have lost many games in my tournaments had I not been granted vacation. I lost power, phone and internet to my house for three weeks due to a natural disaster in New England that affected millions of people. Also, if I was even considering travel in the next year I could not join a tourny. I would have to plan around a camping trip to Maine over the summer or something like that.

We are reall people and real people sometimes need breaks. If you dont like th nature of correspondence chess, then your on the wrong site, sorry. Tournaments take years sometimes but just hang in there.

Also, honestly, how many of you have actually advanced to the second round of a tournament? Before you complain, think about how much these things actually affect you.

I too would have lost most of my tourney games (>20) had I not had vacation when I got stuck out in Wyoming for a week. That said, the guys who abuse vacation by going on it every week or two are very inconsiderate at the least. That is why I favor a limted vacation for tourneys, say a shortened version and only once or twice per tourney
