Yeah, but you've almost got to allow for vacations -- who knows how long tourneys will last -- you mean if I have a trip coming up in three months, I shouldn't sign up for a tourney now?  I don't know if I will be in the same tourney or not when I leave.  I think vacation should be able to be taken during play, but if anything, what about limiting the number of vacation days one can take during a tourney.  For example, I know I will be on a trip in 3 months, and who knows if I am in a tourney or not, but I know I will be out for 10 days.  So, is 10 days too long and will it hold up a tourney for too long?  If so, then I should not sign up for one -- but then again, that leads to the question of yes, 10 days might be too long, but if I sign-up for a tourney now, I might be done before my vacation starts and the point is moot.  Isn't this called circular logic?  Like watching a cat chase its tail....

Yeah, because tournaments can be very long, we pretty much have to allow vacations. We are considering a "no vacation" option for TDs who are running smaller faster tournaments.

you bring up a good point... with that maybe restricting vacation time from some tournaments and not others.  Example; I'm in one that has over 600 players, this is already going to be a long enough tournament that vacation time really won't matter.  but maybe other tournament's with a smaller crews might justify denying vacation time. 

Good point KnightNotHorse. I guess i'm just worried about tourney's taking over a year to complete (perhaps this is normal for online tourneys).

I think having tournaments with different time formats would work best. That way, everyone could find a tournament that suites their needs.

I agree with aamons. I have some games of the tournament finished and others that are on the second move. Maybe if there was a total amount of time each side could take for all their moves (like one month) which is way better than the possibility of waiting 5 months for a game to end. I would think someone who has enough interest and competiveness to join a tournament could find time for more than 1 move per 3 days.

I can't see that vacation is a killer, the main driver is how fast one plays on an ongoing basis, e.g. if someone only plays one move every three days ongoing it's going to take a long time for the match.  If both players are like that then ten days vacation exapmple is only a couple of moves! In general it seems most players go faster than 3 days per move, so it should be fine overall to allow vacation, although I think anyone going on a four week extended trip should think of their opponents before signing up.

I don't think i'm smart enough to come up with an alternative. I'm not really complaining, I will enter many tournaments regardless.

I'd like to make a suggestion to the "upcoming tournaments" page to help people find appropriate tournaments.  (Please let me know if I've missed this feature.)

 

Next to the "sort by" dropdown box, add a check box called "show available tournaments".  This would filter out the tournaments a player doesn't qualify for due to the tournament being full, by invitation only, or having range requirements the player doesn't meet.  There are a lot of tournaments and this would help us weed out those we can't join to find those we can.

 

This may belong instead on a player's prefs pages -- default view filters, perhaps?

What are the tie break points? What happens if both players on a group have the same points and between them they have won one game each, who advances?

if you beat someone who has 2 points you get 2 tiebreak points. If you end up with a draw you get half your opponent's points as tiebreak points.

3. Mary	1  0	0.5  0	X	1.5	3.75

A player's tiebreak score is calculated by adding the sum of the player's points they have defeated to half the sum of the player's points they have drawn against.

 

Bob won two games against John and one game against Mary. So Bob gets 2x1.5 points from John and 1.5 points from Mary, which sums up to 4.5 tiebreak points.
John won one game and drew one game against Mary. So John gets 1.5x1.5 points from Mary, which sums up to 2.25 tiebreak points.
Mary won one game against Bob and drew one game against John. So Mary gets 1x3.0 points from Bob and 0.5x1.5 points from John, which sums up to 3.75 tiebreak points.

I signed up for a tournament a while ago, and when it started, I had games titled both Round 1 and Round 2.  How did this happen?  (The tournament is titled "Under 1500 - Round #", and I think it's still going.)

A question about tournaments.  I have organized a small invite-only tournament for a few friends and it is going well.  They are enthusiastic and talking it up among their friends.  We're only about 25% of the way through, but already thinking of the next tournament.  In that connection...

How do I implement the knock-out aspect of a tournament.  For example, if we have 10 or 12 people playing how do we avoid having everyone needing to play 18 or 22 games respectively but instead implement a situation where , say, 5 players compete with each other and the winners then compete... I think thatis what the 5->1 (or whatever) style tournament indicator means, right?  My question is how do I set that up?  I don't see that option when I'm creating the tournament.

In order to run that style of tournament, you must have a platinum/diamond membership. This will allow you to run multi-round tournaments, and you will then see an additional option on the create tournament page to select "group size".

That's what I was afraid of!
