I am proposing to host a tournament - 'The world Chess.com Championships'.

The championships will be a big event, along the lines of the old style FIDE WC cycle. So, their will be zonals, interzonals, candidiates matches, semi-finals and WC final match. (rate of play is 1 day per move - unless otherwise specified)

Details Below:

ZONALS - Please put your name forward if you wish to play in the zonal tournaments. i need to know also which country you wish to represent and from this, will decide the zone of the world you belong to (e.g europe, central and south america etc etc) and so which zonal round robin zonal tournament you will play in.

INTERZONALS - The top players from each zonal (exact numbers going forward will depend on entry numbers) will go forward to the interzonal round robin tournament. The top 16 players from this will go forward to the.......

CANDIDATES MATCHES- Players will be paired up and play a mini match (Best of 5 games). The winning player of each match progresses to quaterfinals match stage [in the event of a 2.5 - 2.5 tie there will be a three match play off on live chess - 10 mins per player each game].

QUARTER FINALS - The 8 players from candidates matches will go in to quarter finals. Same 'mini - match' format as the candidates matches (above).

SEMI FINALS - The four players from QF will be paired up and play a best of 7 mini match [in the event of a 3.5 - 3.5 tie there will be a three match play off on live chess - 10 mins per player each game].

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL - The 2 finalists will play each other in a best of 7 mini - match and the winner will be crowned World chess.com champion.

If you wish to sign up for the initial zonal tournaments, please do so below.

The whole cycle will not be starting until at least the end of September, although the exact start date(s) will be confirmed once numbers are known -as I have alot of working out to do!

Deadline for Zonal sign ups is: 30 August 2009.

ENJOY.

Maybe............ My initial plan was that once we have a reigning 'world champ', there will be a WC cycle (every two/three years?) to decide a challenger - the WC would sit out the matches and await the challenger.

No, I am organising it. At moment, chess.com are not involved - but they might be?

Why not use a "Join Tournament" page like those used for the other tournaments here.

 Because -

1. i wanted to gauge interest

2. there will be a number of zonal tournaments running simultaneously, it is important that people are in the correct zonal tournament. At present, I do not know numbers - it may be that some zones of the world need two (or more) running simultaneously e.g Europe might need 2 as one large tournament would take too long to complete. The tournaments are not set up at present, but will be set up as invite only, sent out to people who express an interest (matched to their correct zone).

Regarding vacations - yes they are permitted, but please only sign up if you are not going to be away for weeks on end. Do not take advantage of the vacations.

I agree! Let's see if we get official chess.com backing!

Haha, good luck with that. :-)

How are you going to handle, uh, what's a good way to put this, uh...

How are you going to handle people who have their account closed by staff in the middle of the tournament?

oooh, i hadn't thought of that.

I think that they lose all of their games by default (i.e everyone that should have played them, in that round,  gets points for a win).

What if a player "has their account closed" during the interzonal round? Would you promote the next-player-in-line from the relevant zonal?

Also, wouldn't it be embarrassing if one of the Candidates ended up "having their account closed"?
